Returning Officers Report EGM 6 June 2023 Richard Evans
PRIOR POST: 29 May 2023
Dear Members,
The Board, under requisition from a group of 7 Day members, has convened a second extraordinary general meeting for Tuesday 6th June 2023 to consider a special resolution to amend the Club’s constitution.
The first general meeting on the matter was aborted and led to a membership review panel being formed. From that panel a trial of playing rights was adopted by the Board and put in place from 1 May 2023 until end of July 2023. The tabled special resolution seeks to take effect from 1 July 2023.
The By-Laws in place for the trial provide:
- A solution to any issues of discrimination
- Minimal adverse effect on the capacity of members to obtain a game*
- Increased available playing times to all categories of members#
- Flexibility to amend the By-Laws if required.
- Retention of the traditional and popular Women’s Tuesday and Men’s Wednesday competitions
- A fair readjustment of fees^ and benefits towards a simpler inclusive category structure
Aside from the noted items above, the resolution if passed will:
- reduce the rights of current and future Boards to manage the affairs of the Club for the benefit of all members
- revive the previous discrimination issue and create a new discrimination issue requiring restructuring of playing rights~
- be a compelling case from voting members for the Board to end gender specific days
- expose the Club to a potential claim of oppression (whereby the rights of one class of member [unable to vote] are adversely affected by the vote of another class of member).
As such, the Board is opposed to the resolution and asks eligible members to support the Board and vote against the resolution.
